Saturday,Oct 11 2008, 05:02:33 PMYears gone by and still
Now I'm going to get all acoustic. This is the third of my dad's all time favourite songs. There are so many different ones he loved, but I chose to do only three together. I might do some more in the future. This particular song is called "Baby can I hold you tonight". Boyzone did a well known cover version of this song, but I still prefer the original which was by "Tracy Chapman". It sits on an album of wonderful tracks.
I had a comment recently from someone telling me that I should stop relying on backing tracks. So I sat in front of my camera and played this on guitar. I have to tell you my opinions about backing tracks. I think that there is absolutely nothing wrong with using them. We can't all play musical instruments, and they can be very useful. How many lead singers of bands just sing? Quite a few to my knowledge. One of the most versatile instruments any person can play is the voice. So this is what I say to those that use backing tracks. Keep on using them. If you get criticised for it, then the best thing to do is ignore those comments. The most important element of all this, is that you enjoy doing what you do.. Not all people will like it. Could you think of any singer that is adored by 100% of the earth's population? Some people love what you do, and some people hate it. An e-book I was reading recently said that if 1% of the populationof the world like you, then you can count yourself as a success, because 1% of the worlds population is over 60 million people! :)
Now for the song. I hope you like my gentle take on this wonderful tune.
My Dad. Part 2
My father was very partial to females, and he acted upon his desires many times. One female at a time was not always the order of the day. There was one story I was told about two girlfriends he had. They were bi-sexual and were very much into each other, if you know what I mean. Anyway the sleeping arrangement were three people, one bed. This lasted for a while. I'm curious to know what the neighbours were thinking.
How this man came to be my father is confusing. As you will see when I give you a bit of background on my mother. If fate turned a different corner, then I would have been the son of a certain "Mungo Jerry". Does the name ring a bell? How about the number one hit "In the summertime"? Mungo spent some time pursuing my mother. It all came to a head when he asked her why she wouldn't go out with him. I think the answer put him off for good. Perhaps it hurt his pride. My mother replied "It's because you are too ugly". I always wondered who I had inherited the compulsion for honesty from. After looking at old photographs of him, I have to say I'm in agreement with my mother. Good call mum :) Though I'm sure there are many women out there that found his very rugged appearance attractive. Just not my mother.
As time passed, the paths of my mother and father crossed. If you took their backgrounds into consideration, you would be scratching your head at the union. My father had a below par hereditary C.V., whilst my mother's side of the family stemmed from 19th century aristocracy. Well as far back as I can trace. I'll be doing the family tree bit at some point in the future to see how far I can take it back. My mothers family will be quite easy, but I'm not sure it will be as easy to trace my father's roots.
To be continued...
As always, I'm going to finish off with my Youtube statistics. There's been a bit of a yo-yo effect with my subscribers over the last 5 days, but they have still climbed. Another 3 hve been added overall and the figure is now 893. My channel viewing now stand at 20,958 and the aggregate figure for all the viewings of my videos is 349,427.
So what's coming next?
I prepared a number of cover versions to put up in advance, so that I could spend time concentrating on my album. I'll be giving a track listing in the next post. My next few vids are a crash test dummies request, and a rather special Youtube duet with a lady who has a wonderful voice.
Tuesday,Oct 7 2008, 12:51:16 PMTurn around and I'll be there.
This is the second of three songs in tribute to my father who passed away recently. It's my version of Through the barricades, originally performed by the group Spandau ballet. For those that don't know, it's about Northern Ireland.
Check it out.
I mentioned I was going to say a few things about my dad's life, and so I will. I only know a small part of what happened in his life. Still there's enough to mention that will astonish even the most resolute. ...

Tuesday,Sep 16 2008, 09:15:11 PMThe family gets smaller
I haven't done any posts in a while, due to the fact that my father died recently. He reached the age of 70 years, which was an achievement in itself, considering he was an alcoholic. It was this addiction that finally took its toll on him.
I failed to see him before he passed away. As per usual, he went on the missing list, before admitting himself to hospital. He passed away the following day.
He had a very colourful existence, and there are many tales of his adventures, and happenings that surrounded him. He has met a lot of people in his life. ...

It's been a while since I last posted, and uploaded a video to Youtube. It's been a very busy month, and very little of that has been music related. I attended the wedding of a friend, and I have to say that that it was one of the best I've been to. We were very well looked after. Coaches were provided between all destinations, so that we could concentrate on the important things, like raising our alcohol levels :)
It all happened on the Isle of Man. A highlight of the day was a tram that was hired out exclusively to transport us all to the peak of ...

Friday,Jul 25 2008, 03:39:32 PMMy quest for musicians
I made a decision to seek out some local musicians to help me out with my album project.
The biggest issue I have with my songwriting is on the music side. I think that I pen good songs, and that has been confirmed by many musicians and industry pro's.
I'm very happy with my lyric writing, and the general melodies. The problem comes when I try to get the song out of my head into musical form. Because I only play basic guitar, I cannot seem to add the expression I want from the musical instruments. Like I do with the vocals. I'm sure that I will in ...
