As we all know, there are four tones in chinese which I name as "flat""rising""go down and up"and "strong".To many of my overseas friends, the four tones are confusing and are not easy to pronounce correctly and clearly.I like talking with them in chinese, since I'm that kind of person who bases his/her happiness on others' sadness.:D it's my pleasure to hear various versions of chinese language:Engliese,Frenese,Spainese~~~~ Besides,to numerous chinese people, including me,who spend years studying english, practicing english pronunciation over and over again and having lost countless faces when exhibiting Chinglish, making fun of foreigners' pronunciation is a real compensation to our broken hearts and dangling self-respect.;D
Here is my experience I'd like to share with you all.Last sunday I met an american friend on skype. As usual, the imaginative dude created many new chinese words i'd never heard before and would definitly not hear again from any normal chinese in future. For example, when we talked about a sentence: Although I tried my best,I had to give up at last.I let him interpret it in chinese.(NOTE: "give up" is "放弃"<fang qi> in chinese, both the fourth tone). He had been learning chinese for at least one year and had been very confident of his level. It took him less than a minute to type out the answer. His answer would be flawless if he didn't mistook "放弃" for""放气"(the two have exactly the same pronunciation but totally different meanings).
I tried hard to hide any trace of smile and peacefully inspired him to think about the word again in the area of physiology. My friend is a smart person, after thinking about one minute or two,he asked cautiously if it meant fart. I nodded!! Then we burst out laughing!!
He,"a genius",changed this sentence into"Although I tried my best,I had to fart at last"!
But if there is a person out in the world who is so honest that he feels it necessary to write such an experience down to let others know?!!!! hehe~~~~
Another funny mistake happened near the end of our talk.I ask him what he did after school. Then his reply made me stunned!
"我娶王八了"(which means 'I married a bitch' )!
Realizing I hadn't got the point,he repeated.
What???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally he had to tell me in english .What a relief! It turned out to be"I went to net cafe" :)
我去网吧了!
There are five characters and tones in his words.and he mistook three important tones, which belong to the verb and the objective!!!!!
I faint! :) Lao wai zhen hao wan!!(foreigners are really funny!)
