SO FAR, SO GOOD.... SO WHAT!?!

In 1982 Dave Mustaine left a band called Panic to join Metallica. He played lead guitar for them live and wrote and recorded
some demo songs with them. I have seen a Metallica Rockumentary which says that after Metallica got signed they had to drive
from LA to New York. On the trip Dave got preity drunk and got 'very aggressive and destructive'. The crunch apparently
came when James Hetfield brought his two Pitbull Terriers to the studio and Dave kicked one, James started shouting at him
and so Dave punched him. This was the final straw for James and Lars and they gave Dave his marching orders, later going on
to say he had only been a temporary member anyway.
After Dave left Metallica he was bent on revenge and intent on starting a band who would be better than Metallica. So he
moved to a small apartment in Hollywood and formed the band Fallen Angels. Apparently Fallen Angels didn't get to far so
they split up.
On New Years day 1983 Dave was woken by the sound of someone playing bass. Dave was in a very hungover state and so
rock folk lore says he threw a plant pot threw the apartment below's window. Some time after that Dave was able to listen to
the bass player while he was in a more relaxed mood. He liked what he heard and went to talk with the bassist. The bassist
was called David Ellefson and the two Daves decided to start up a band.
The band was of course Megadeth, Dave getting the name from a leaflet that came through his door and also because he
wanted Megadeth's live shows to be as powerful as a nuclear explosion.
Soon after the band was formed drummer Lee Rash and guitarist Kerry King joined. I don't know anything about Lee Rash
who apparently disappeared after leaving Megadeth but Kerry King was at the time and still is a member of Slayer. They were
still looking for another guy to sing for them but the only guy they could find was some freak with make up on. The story goes
that he turned up for rehearsal once with all his make up on and a six pack of beer. Dave took hi beer but told the singer to
leave. So after drinking the beer (and probably some more of his own as well) Dave decided to give singing a go. At first Dave
had trouble playing both guitar and singing so he got the nickname the angry whiner or something from his friends.
Once Dave had got the vocals sorted this lineup did some gigs (between 5 and 10) before Kerry had to make the decision
between Slayer and Megadeth, he chose Slayer and remains in the band to this day. Some time between Kerry leaving and
1984 beginning Lee Rash left the band to where no one knows. Kerry and Lee were replaced by Chris Poland on guitar and
Gar Samuelson on drums. They had played together before in a jazz fusion band. This helped the new band lock together
quickly and they were away again.
The band recorded a three track demo tape and circulated it among underground metal fans in LA, the response was good
which was encouraging for the band showing they were on the right track.
In 1984 Megadeth were signed to Combat records, a small unknown label presumably based in LA. Combat gave Megadeth a
recording advance of $8000 but unfortunately the band spent about half of that on 'recreation' (basically drugs and alcohol).
Combat refused to give Megadeth any more money and so the album was recorded for $4000. So consequently that is why
the album sounds sort of rough. Anyway the album was well received by critics and the few fans who bought the album.
The tour that followed was something of a low key affair. It was called the Killing For A Living tour, was in support of Exciter
and lasted about six weeks. According to Jr during that time the band wrecked three cars and four vans.  Jr also called the tour
something different from Killing For A Living, he called it 'The Tour From Hell'! And so Megadeth drag themselves back to the
studio to start recording their next album.

After he left Metallica in 1983, guitarist/vocalist Dave Mustaine formed the thrash metal quartet Megadeth. Though Megadeth followed the basic blueprint of Metallica's relentless attack, Mustaine's group distinguished themselves from his earlier band by lessening the progressive rock influences, adding an emphasis on instrumental skills, speeding the tempo up slightly, and making the instrumental attack harsher. By streamlining the classic thrash metal approach and making the music more threatening, as well as making the lyrics more nihilistic, Megadeth became one of the leading bands of the genre during the mid-'80s and late '80s. Each album they released went at least gold, and they continually sold out arenas across America, in addition to developing a strong following overseas. By the early '90s, they had toned their music down slightly, yet that simply increased their following; all of their proper '90s albums debuted in the Top Ten.

Throughout Megadeth's many lineup changes, the two core members were bassist
Dave Ellefson and guitarist/vocalist Dave Mustaine (b. September 13, 1961), who was the band's official leader. Mustaine grew up in the suburbs of Southern California, where he was raised by his mother in a broken home; frequently, his mother left him to be raised by aunts and uncles, who never encouraged his musical inclinations and often belittled him for his fondness for heavy metal. In 1981, he formed Metallica with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. Mustaine spent two years with Metallica, developing a strong cult following in California's underground metal scene, before he was kicked out of the group in 1983, allegedly over his substance abuse. Immediately following his firing, he formed Megadeth with Ellefson, Slayer guitarist Kerry King, and drummer Lee Rauch. This lineup was extremely short-lived, and Mustaine and Ellefson soon recruited guitarist Chris Poland and drummer Gar Samuelson.

For the next few years, Megadeth toured and gained a following, signing with the independent label Combat in late 1984. The following year, the group released their debut, Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good!, which received strong reviews, not only in metal-oriented publications, but also in mainstream music magazines. The album sold very well for an independent release, which attracted the attention of major record labels. By the end of the year, the group had signed with Capitol. Megadeth's first major-label album, Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?, was released in the fall of 1986. Like its predecessor,
Peace Sells was greeted by strong reviews and sales; it eventually went platinum.

Although the band's fortunes were on the upswing,
Mustaine was beginning to sink deeper into drug abuse, specifically heroin. Soon, his addictions began to affect his work. Many stories concerning his erratic behavior were circulating within the metal community, and they seemed to be proven correct when he fired both Poland and Samuelson before the recording of the band's third album; they were replaced by Jeff Young and Chuck Behler, respectively. The new lineup debuted on So Far, So Good...So What!, released early in 1988. So Far, So Good peaked at number 28 on the charts and also eventually went platinum (despite less enthusiastic reviews); it also featured a notorious cover of the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the UK," with incorrect lyrics.

In the years immediately following the release of So Far, So Good...So What!,
Mustaine was impaired by his drug addictions. In early 1990, he was arrested for driving under the influence and entered a rehabilitation program. By the end of the year, he was not only sober, but he had reconvened the band; firing Young and Behler and replacing them with guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza. This lineup recorded Megadeth's fourth and most progressive album, Rust in Peace. The record peaked at number 23 on the American charts and went platinum. 1991 saw Metallica break through to the mainstream, and sensing the possibility for similar success, Mustaine followed suit in stripping down the band's sound, though it remained as technically perfectionistic as Rust in Peace. The result, Countdown to Extinction, was released in 1992, entering the charts at number two; the record went double-platinum and became the band's biggest hit, confirming that they had retained their audience in the wake of grunge.

Now one of the most popular metal bands in the world, Megadeth moved farther toward the mainstream with
Youthanasia in 1994, which entered the charts at number four and, like its predecessor, went platinum. The following year, the group released Hidden Treasures, a rarities collection which featured some of the soundtrack tunes that had helped expand the group's MTV audience in the early '90s. 1997's Cryptic Writings found Megadeth fully embraced by album rock radio, which formerly would never have touched the band. Ex-Suicidal Tendencies drummer Jimmy DeGrasso signed on in 1998, in time for the following year's Risk. In 2000, following the release of the best-of Capitol Punishment, Marty Friedman followed Nick Menza out the door; he was replaced by former Savatage and Alice Cooper guitarist Al Pitrelli. After signing with the BMG subsidiary Sanctuary, Megadeth debuted its new lineup on 2001's The World Needs a Hero.

While on break from touring,
Mustaine suffered a serious injury in January 2002 while staying in Texas. He was diagnosed with having radial neuropathy shortly thereafter, a condition that prevented him from playing guitar. The compressed radial nerves in his left arm and hand were strained, leaving Megadeth little recourse but to disband in April 2002, after almost 20 years in the music industry. During his time off, Mustaine prepared an elaborate reissue campaign, remastering each album and reissuing them all with bonus material. This campaign set the stage for a Megadeth revival, which came in 2004-2005 with a surprising comeback album, The System Has Failed, and some heavy touring. Capitol released a new best-of, simply titled Greatest Hits, just as Megadeth hit the summer concert circuit, headlining Mustaine's own Gigantour festival. Stephen Thomas Erlewin

Dave Mustaine

Dave Mustaine was born on September the 13th 1961 in La Mea, California.  He joined the band in late 1981 and remained with them until 11 April 1983.  During his short time in Metallica, Dave Mustaine (lead guitar) toured with the band, co-wrote several songs which were later featured on the albums "Kill 'Em All" and "Ride The Lightning" and recorded several songs with the band, including the "No Life Til Leather" demo tape.

In LA at the end of 1982, Lars and James the self appointed heads of the band decided that if they were going to progress towards a more professional league then a few changes would have to be made.  Problems had arisen with Dave Mustaine which went beyond simple onstage competition. "Dave was an incredibly talented guy" said Brian Slagel, "But he also had an incredibly large problem with alcohol and drugs.  He'd get wasted and become a real crazy person, a raging maniac, and the other guys just couldn't deal with that after a while.  I mean, they all drank of course, but I guess they could all hold their liquor better than Dave, and I could see they were beginning to get fed up of seeing Dave drunk out of his mind all the time."
One of the final straws for the band was on the road trip from San Francisco to New York to meet up with Johnny Z. The band nearly didn't make it: a crash with a jeep during a snow storm near Wyoming left the bands truck in a ditch.  No-one was hurt, but as the incident occurred while Dave Mustaine was drink driving the others (James, Lars and Cliff) made a mental note that as soon as they started the new phase of their career on the east coast they had to get rid of him.

Dave Mustaine's last gig with Metallica was on a Saturday night in New York on a bill that also included Venom and Vandenburg.  After discussing the problem the next day (Sunday) with new manager Johnny Z over a few crates of beer, Hetfield woke the volatile guitarist on the Monday morning to tell him on behalf of the others that he had an hour to pack his bags and leave as they had booked him on a greyhound airlines "flight" back home.  It was a painful decision and the band tried to soften the blow by heading into Manhattan that night and drowning their sorrows in a bottle of vodka.  Nonetheless it was a decision that had to be made.

Today Johnny Z refuses to elaborate on the events surrounding Mustaine's exit. "The true story about Dave Mustaine will never be told, because there's something of a pact between Dave, Metallica and myself," he says.  "All the pain, all the guilt and all the blame came to rest last year, and so now it really is time to let sleeping dogs lie."  At the time, however, there wasn't a great deal of love lost between those involved.

"Basically," Mustaine told Metal Forces fanzine shortly after re-emerging with his new band, Megadeth, "when they told me to leave I packed in about 20 seconds and I was gone.  I wasn't upset at all as I wanted to start a solo project during the middle of Metallica anyway".

Dave Mustaine's replacement Kirk Hammett from the band Exodus would take up the lead guitar position in Metallica.

Eddie, the iconic mascot of the band, has been featured on the artwork of almost every album and single. It also appears in various videos such as "Women In Uniform". He is also the mascot of Brazillian Football organized supporters group "Força Jovem Vasco".

Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band from east London. The band were formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris, who was formerly a member of Gypsy's Kiss and Smiler. Iron Maiden are one of the most successful and influential bands in the heavy metal genre, having sold more than 70 million albums world-wide. The band won the Ivor Novello award for international achievement in 2002.[1]

The band have written many songs based on folklore, movies and books, such as "The Wickerman", "The Prisoner", "Where Eagles Dare", "To Tame a Land" and "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" (based on Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem). Iron Maiden have headlined several major events in its career, notably Rock in Rio, Ozzfest alongside Black Sabbath, Donington's famous "Monsters of Rock", "Download" Festivals and the "Reading and Leeds Festivals."

Iron Maiden's mascot, Eddie, is a perennial fixture in the band's horror-influenced album cover art, as well as in live shows. Eddie was drawn by Derek Riggs until 1992, but has had various incarnations by numerous artists, the most notable being Melvyn Grant. Eddie is also featured in a first-person shooter video game and best-of album – Ed Hunter – as well as numerous books, graphic comics and band-related merchandise.

The road from formation to the present started on Christmas Day 1975, shortly after bassist Steve Harris had formed his own band after his bandmates in the group Smiler had rejected many of his original songs. Harris attributes the band name to a movie adaptation of The Man in the Iron Mask, which he saw around that time, and so the group was christened after the medieval torture device.[2]

Steve Harris and guitarist Dave Murray remain the longest surviving members of Iron Maiden. The band had twelve different line-ups in the 1970s, paying their dues on the mostly punk club circuit in London's rough East End in the slums of manor park in a pub called the Ruskin Arms, while struggling to form a stable lineup of band members. Although Iron Maiden were a metal band influenced by Thin Lizzy, Queen, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, UFO, Yes, Wishbone Ash and Apocalypse, its earlier music had undoubted punk overtones. Lacking "enough energy or charisma onstage",[3] original vocalist Paul Day became replaced by the outlandish Dennis Wilcock, a huge KISS fan who utilized fire, make-up and fake blood during live performances. Wilcock's friend, Murray, was invited to join, to the frustration of guitarists Dave Sullivan and Terry Rance.[4] This fuelled Harris to temporarily split the band in the Winter of 1976,[4] though the group reformed soon after with Murray as sole axeman.

Maiden recruited another guitarist in 1977, Bob Sawyer, who caused a rift between Murray and Wilcock, prompting Harris to sack both Murray and Sawyer.[5] A disastrous gig at the Bridgehouse in November 1977, with a makeshift line-up including Tony Moore on keyboards, Terry Wrapram on guitar, and drummer Barry Purkis (later rechristened 'Thunderstick') resulted in Harris sacking the entire band.[6] Dave Murray was reinstated and Doug Sampson was drafted in as drummer.

Star Studios in Bow, London played host to three rehearsals a week throughout the Summer and Autumn of 1978.[7] A chance meeting at the Red Lion pub in Leytonstone evolved into a successful audition for punky vocalist Paul Di'Anno. Steve Harris reflected; There's sort of a quality in Paul's voice, a raspiness in his voice, or whatever you want to call it, that just gave it this great edge.[8]"

Iron Maiden had been playing for three years, but had never recorded any of their music. On New Year's Eve of 1978, the band recorded one of the most famous demos in hard rock history,[9] The Soundhouse Tapes. Featuring only three songs, and a four-piece (all subsequent recordings featured a five-piece until 1999 when the band became a six-piece) the band sold all five thousand copies within weeks.[10] One track found upon the demo, "Prowler", went to number one on Neal Kay's Heavy Metal Soundhouse charts in Sounds magazine.[11] Their first appearance on an album was on the compilation Metal for Muthas (released on 15 February 1980) with two early versions of "Sanctuary" and "Wrathchild".

For most of 1977 and all of 1978, Murray was the sole six-stringer in the band. This changed with the arrival of Paul Cairns in 1979. Shortly before going into the studio, Cairns left the band and several other guitarists played alongside Murray until the band finally settled on Dennis Stratton. Initially, the band wanted to hire Dave Murray's childhood friend Adrian Smith, but Smith was busy singing and playing guitar for his own band, Urchin.[12] Drummer Doug Sampson was also replaced by Clive Burr (who was brought into the band by Stratton), and in December 1979, the band landed a major record deal by signing an EMI contract at the label's old building in London's Manchester Square.[13]

 Initial success

The eponymous 1980 release, Iron Maiden, made number 4 on the UK charts in its first week of release,[14] and the group became one of the leading proponents of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.[15] The band went on to open for KISS on their 1980 Unmasked tour, as well as opening select dates for the legendary Judas Priest. After the KISS tour, Dennis Stratton was fired from the band as a result of creative and personal differences.[16] The timing was right for the arrival of guitarist Adrian Smith.

Smith brought a sharp, staccato sound to Iron Maiden. His tight, experimental style was the complete opposite of Murray's smooth, rapid take on blues. One of Iron Maiden's trademarks is the double "twin lead" harmonising guitar stylings of Murray and Smith, a style pioneered by Wishbone Ash and Thin Lizzy, and developed further by Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.[citation needed]

In 1981, Maiden released their second album, titled Killers. This new album contained many tracks that had been penned prior to the release of the debut album, but were considered surplus. With songs already shaped on the road well in advance, only three new tracks were written for the album; "Prodigal Son", "Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "Killers".[17]

 The next level

Like many bands, Maiden consumed a large amount of alcohol in their early days.[18] However, most members dabbled very little in other drugs, with Steve Harris never taking them at all.[19] The exception was vocalist Paul Di'Anno, who demonstrated increasingly self-destructive behaviour, particularly through cocaine usage.[20] His performances began to suffer, just as the band was beginning to achieve large-scale success in America. At the end of 1981 the band replaced Di'Anno with former Samson vocalist Bruce Dickinson. Legendary DJ Tommy Vance had told Dickinson not to join the band – advice which was ignored. Dickinson's debut with Iron Maiden was 1982's The Number of the Beast, an album that claimed the band their first ever UK number 1 record[21] and additionally became a Top Ten hit in many other countries.[22] For the second time the band went on a world tour, visiting the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia. The tour's US leg was marred (or perhaps promoted) by controversy stemming from an American right-wing political pressure group that claimed Iron Maiden was a Satanic group because of the album's title track, [22] ostensibly concerning a nightmare Steve Harris suffered.[23] Iron Maiden members' attempts to deflect the criticism failed to dampen persistent accusations. A group of Christian activists destroyed the band's records (along with those of Ozzy Osbourne) by burning them in a large fire. However, these accusations of Satanism were largely based on misinterpretation of the song, or fear of the aggressive, energetic nature of the music. Iron Maiden's current drummer, Nicko McBrain, is a born-again Christian, and is happy to play the song, which he sees as a warning against Satanism.[23]

On the same tour, producer Martin Birch was involved in a car accident with a group of church-goers. Coincidentally, the bill for the repair came to £666, a figure which Birch refused to pay, instead opting for a higher amount.[24]

Actor Patrick McGoohan was accommodating when a request was made to allow the band to use a spoken intro from the cult TV series, The Prisoner, in which McGoohan was the lead actor, producer and series writer. McGoohan was a big name in 1982, and Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood was nervous about making the request. The conversation between McGoohan and Smallwood allegedly went:

McGoohan: "What did you say the name of the band was again?"
Smallwood: "Iron Maiden"
McGoohan: "A rock band, you say...do it![25]"

A Matter of Life and Death album cover

Iron Maiden's 14th studio album named A Matter of Life and Death was released worldwide on the 28 August 2006 (5 September for the US and 29th August for Canada). It was preceded by the "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" single on August 14. The album was once again produced by Kevin Shirley, and is the longest Iron Maiden album to date. The album is not a concept album, but six songs directly revolve around war and four around religion (some overlapping takes place) and these two themes shade every piece of the album; this is likely Maiden's most serious lyrical effort. The music is often described as a cross between Dance of Death, The X Factor, and Bruce Dickinson's late nineties solo material, and seven of the songs could qualify as epics by general metal standards.

Anticipating the release, the official website released two songs in streaming audio on August 10 and 11. The album topped the charts in ten countries, and entered the American charts in the Top 10 for the first time since album sales could be properly counted (i.e., 1991).

The album won the Classic Rock 2006 — Album of the Year Award, voted for by Classic Rock's fans.

During the A Matter of Life and Death tour, Bruce Dickinson hinted at additional performances in the near future, stating that there would be a 2007 tour including songs from the period following the band's first four studio albums.[citation needed] At multiple dates towards the end of the tour Dickinson hinted that Iron Maiden may be playing at Donington in 2007. On December 22, a message was posted on their official website confirming that they would be playing at the Dubai Desert Rock Festival on March 9, 2007, which will be the first time the band have ever played there. [32] During the Copenhagen show on Thursday 28th December, Bruce Dickinson mentioned that Maiden would be "bringing back the 80's egyptian thing in 2008". This could be hinting the Early Days part 2 DVD and Tour
